How to Cut Base Molding with a Miter Saw?
Although to cut base molding is quite tricky, I would say that it is an easy project. The only thing you would require is to cut your board correctly. But, remember that the type of cut you would make will be simpler when you use the proper equipment. One such equipment is your miter saw. To cut base molding with a miter saw will be much easier as you could cut the baseboard at the proper angle by using a miter saw.
The following guide will show you the step by step process on how to cut base molding with your miter saw. Continue reading …
Things Required:
For cutting the baseboards, you must require the following things:
- Miter Saw
- Measuring Tape
- Pencil
- Protective Eyewear
Important Things to Remember:
There are few important things to remember when you are about to cut base molding with a miter saw. Here are those for your reference:
- Miter Angle: The miter angle is the degree of the angle on your miter saw. You can find this measurement near to the handle of the miter saw.
- Bevel Angle: This can be seen near the back of your miter saw and is less visible.
- Miter Angle vs. Bevel Angle: One would have to alter the miter and bevel angles for the cases of imperfect walls in a room. The imperfect walls are the ones that will not be square or plumb.
What to Be Done Before Starting Off?
You must do few things before you start off with the cutting process. What are they? Those are the safety precautions which are very important in any cutting process. Find below the list of safety measures that are to be taken when you are cutting the base molds with your miter saw:
- You must put a protective eye wear before starting off with your miter saw. This is very important in preventing accidental injuries.
- You must check whether the power button is in OFF position before you are plugging your miter saw to the power source.
- After you are done with your miter saw, you must unplug the power tools and keep them in a safer place.
What after Safety Precautions?
When you are done with all the safety precautions mentioned above, you must start off with the measuring process. Using a measuring tape, determine the length of the walls. While doing so, you must make sure that you are measuring from one edge to the next. The next thing that has to be done is to look out for the studs in the walls that are lengthier than the baseboards. Here, you must remember a point that you must fasten your baseboard to the stud which is in closest proximity.
The Cutting Process:
How to Make an Inside Corner Cut?
For any room, you would have to come up with four inside corner cuts. For making an inside corner cut, you must adjust your miter and bevel angles to zero and 45 degrees respectively. By using a pencil, make a mark at the back of your baseboard. As soon as you are done with the miter, as well as bevel angle adjustments, turn on your saw.
Make a cut along the mark that has been made with the pencil while making sure that the back side of your board is lengthier than the front side. Now, lower the miter saw onto your board. Proceed to push the saw blade along the trim. When you are done with the cutting of base mold, turn off your miter saw to raise the blade.
Note: While carrying out the cutting process, you must not put more pressure. Also, you should not push the blade forcibly through your baseboard. These things may create damages to the trim.
How to Make an Outside Corner Cut?
For making an outside corner cut, you need not make any changes to the settings that were already made for the inside corner cuts. For this again, you must make a mark with the pencil at the back of the baseboard and start cutting along the same using your miter saw. The process is same as making an inside corner cut with a difference that for an outside corner cut, you must cut your baseboard in such a way that the front side is lengthier than its back.
How to Make a Square Cut?
For making a square cut with your miter cut, you must first determine which type of cut you would need to come up through the ends of your baseboard. For instance, a baseboard that would meet another baseboard face to face would require a square cut. In order to make these kinds of cuts, you must set your miter saw to zero degrees and proceed with the cutting process.
